Rohan Sagar is an ethnomusicologist whose contributions to the field have garnered international recognition for its depth and insight into the music of diverse cultures within Guyana. Born on November 24th, 1967, in a small community within the Rupununi region, Rohan Sagar fostered a curiosity for music from an early age.
Living in different parts of the country exposed Sagar to a variety of musical genres. Through spending his formative years in the interior regions, he experienced the Indigenous culture and music firsthand. Prior to relocating to Georgetown, the country's capital, he resided near the African village of Hopetown in the Berbice where he gained more knowledge of the culture there.
Sagar traveled extensively throughout Guyana, where he spent a considerable amount of time working among local communities to conduct research and collect data on their musical traditions. This involved not only listening to their music, but also engaging with community members, learning from their stories, and gaining social and historical insights into the cultural significance of their traditions.
Digital Heritage GY is Rohan Sagar's latest project, which he founded and compiled. This project is the culmination of more than 30 years of multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary research into Guyana's musical heritage. Its primary goal is to foster the preservation of ethnic music and culture in Guyana through the digital humanities.
