Beginning in January 2017 A Kids' Guide to Canada launched and caught the attention of thousands of excited Canadian teachers, principals, superintendents, directors, trustees, and parents. With over a quarter of a million dollars of support from educational organizations, small businesses, and the Canadian Government, this teacher-led initiative is inviting every K-8 teacher and class in Canada to investigate, honour, and introduce the land and people of their neighbourhood community to the children of Canada, and to help build a new era of “understanding, empathy, respect” in the process. (Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Call to Action 63.3)
Kids are invited to help create Canada’s first ever multi-lingual, multi-cultural interactive guide to Canada created by kids, for kids.
The project takes place in 3 parts, with a focus on students creating artifacts that will be shared on an interactive map hosted by ESRI to create Canada's first ever multilingual multi-cultural interactive guide to Canada. The second and third parts of the project are voluntary, and include students learning about cross-cultural communication, digital safety and citizenship, and finally engaging in cross-Canada connections to pursue deeper learning using the Digital Human Library.
With EQAO and report cards right around the corner, wouldn't it be wonderful to have a fun year end project to look forward to in June? Why not end the year in celebration by sharing your neighbourhood, land and people with the children of Canada? Join us!!!
