Digital Human Library is pleased to welcome Andrew Ferguson, Workforce Development Manager with the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI), as our newest dHL Expert! HRAI represents contractors, wholesalers, and manufacturers in the HVACR sector across Canada.
Over the past several years, Andrew has focused on supporting students, educators, and industry partners in better understanding the career pathways available within the skilled trades — particularly in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration.
Why HVACR?
HVACR is a highly technical, essential industry that combines mechanical systems, electrical components, digital controls, problem-solving, and customer interaction. It is an industry that:
- Offers stable, long-term employment
- Provides opportunities for apprenticeship and paid training
- Allows for career growth into supervision, business ownership, sales, technical specialization, and more
- Plays a critical role in energy efficiency and environmental sustainability
Despite these opportunities, many students are simply not aware of what the industry involves or how to access it. That’s where early exposure and honest conversations make a difference.
Supporting Educators and Career Programming
HRAI recognizes the important work educators and guidance professionals do in helping students navigate post-secondary decisions. Their intention is to complement existing programming by providing direct industry perspective, and they value the opportunity to work alongside schools in supporting informed career exploration.
