CHAT QUESTIONS: Media Literacy Week

How would you apply the Media Literacy Week framework to the following situations listed below?

Media Literacy Week Framework: Use, Understand, Engage, Access and Verify

Situation 1: You learn about a new AI tool that will do your homework for you. The legal age to sign up is 18, but you think you should be able to use it.

Situation 2: You see a post about a dangerous event in your local area. You feel like you should warn everyone about it.

Situation 3: A celebrity with a large following posts about a “Very Fast and Easy Weight Loss Diet”. In the comments, people share their want to try the diet, while others are not so sure.

Situation 4: You come across a satirical news article that makes fun of a political event. Some classmates believe it’s real and express strong opinions about it.

Situation 5: A well known tech- finance influencer promotes a new cryptocurrency, which they claim is the next ‘Bitcoin’, urging people to invest now.

Global Student Chat Live Expert on Panel: Matthew Johnson

Matthew Johnson is the Director of Education for MediaSmarts, Canada’s center for digital and media literacy. He is the author of many of MediaSmarts’ resources including its Use, Understand, Create: Digital Literacy Framework for Canadian K-12 Schools. He has served as on expert panels convened by the Canadian Pediatric Society, the Canadian Standards Association and the Sex Information & Education Council of Canada, consulted on provincial curriculum for the Ontario Ministry of Education, and been interviewed by outlets such as The Globe and Mail, BBC News Magazine, The Christian Science Monitor, Radio Canada International and CBC’s The National.
